All About Foot Pain

The feet are hard at work every day as they support your weight when you walk, run, and jump. As a result, foot pain is a common occurrence. Sprains, fractures, and inflammation can limit your movements and impede your daily life. With 26 bones and multiple muscles, ligaments, and tendons in each foot, the possibilities for foot pain are numerous. Common causes of foot pain include improper or ill-fitting footwear, exercise or sports-related injuries, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Diabetes, which can result in nerve and circulation damage, can be a generator of foot pain. Further conditions that cause heel pain are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. Foot deformities like bunions and hammertoes cause foot pain. Warts, ingrown toenails, and corns are among the causes, too. Treatment for foot pain depends on the underlying cause. To learn more, please consult a podiatrist who is trained to deal specifically with foot problems and their causes.

What Is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma is a nerve condition that causes severe pain in the ball of the foot. It usually involves damage to the nerves that run between the third and fourth toes. Some link the feeling to that of having a small pebble in their shoe. The tissue around the nerve becomes thickened which can cause burning pain in the ball of the foot that radiates to the toes. Morton’s neuroma may also cause numbness and tingling. Many believe that wearing high-heeled shoes is a factor in the development of Morton’s neuroma. Some relief may be found by switching to footwear with a lower heel and a wider toe box. Other treatment options include rest, pain medication, orthotics, and injections. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary. If the pain in the ball of the foot persists or gets worse, it is wise to visit a podiatrist for an exam as well as more advanced treatment options.

Reasons for Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can be a result of a sprain, rolling the ankle, arthritis, gout, nerve damage, injury, blocked blood vessels, or infection in the joint. An ankle sprain is the most common cause of ankle pain, and is often caused by rolling or twisting the ankle so that the outside of the ankle moves towards the ground. With a sprain, the ligaments of the ankle holding bones together can get strained or torn. Arthritis - especially osteoarthritis - can also cause pain and inflammation of the joint because it causes wear and tear on the joint. Immediate action to take for ankle pain is rest and elevation of the foot. Compression of the ankle may also help. When the pain subsides, it is a good idea to exercise the ankle by rotating it in circles and flexing it up and down, which can help improve range of motion and reduce swelling. If these actions do not stop the pain completely and/or if there is extreme swelling or bruising, it is time to see a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment options.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with our podiatrists from CNY Foot Surgery & Podiatry Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Recognizing and Treating Plantar Warts

Viral infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that enter the skin of the feet through cuts or breaks can lead to the development of a plantar wart. These are thickened, rough growths of a lighter color than skin that are typically flat, and may have a ridged pattern. They usually develop in high pressure areas, such as the heel and ball of the foot. A small, clotted blood vessel can sometimes be visible, looking like a dark dot in the center of the wart. Sometimes plantar warts grow individually, or they may form in clusters, called mosaics. Because plantar warts grow on the bottom of the feet, they can be painful as the weight of the body bears down on them while standing or walking. Plantar warts are highly contagious, with the HPV spreading through direct contact with another person’s skin, or by sharing personal hygiene items, footwear, or towels that are infected with the virus. Plantar warts are hearty, making them difficult to treat, and have a high rate of recurrence if not completely eradicated. Therefore, plantar warts usually require professional care from a podiatrist who can use a variety of effective treatments to quickly and permanently treat them.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact our podiatrists from CNY Foot Surgery & Podiatry Care. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.
