Simple Methods to Have Nice Feet

Many people worldwide often neglect taking care of their feet. This may lead to developing different types of skin or nail infections, which can be difficult to treat. There are effective everyday foot care practices that may help to prevent specific foot conditions, in addition to enhancing the skin tone of the feet. It is important to wash and dry the feet thoroughly, and it can help to apply a good moisturizer daily. Some people enjoy getting pedicures, which can be beneficial in removing dry and jagged skin. Additionally, when the proper shoes are worn, the feet feel comfortable, and wearing socks can protect the feet against potentially harsh environments. If you would like more methods on how to practice everyday foot care, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact our podiatrists from CNY Foot Surgery & Podiatry Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Preventing Foot Problems

Our feet are body parts that are often taken for granted but they are so important to get us through life. Most people have probably suffered from foot and/or ankle discomfort at some point. The majority of ankle and foot problems are chronic and are generally caused by repetitive movement leading to overuse and strain. Overloaded tendons or joints can lead to tendonitis or cartilage breakdown and continual stretching of ligaments can lead to joint instability. Important things to consider in trying to prevent foot problems include force (compression, tension, torsion/twisting) on feet and ankles, foot type, body weight, activity, and frequency of activity. Developing a relationship with a podiatrist early and seeing such a specialist throughout one’s life can help with the prevention of foot and ankle problems and treatment of such problems if they do arise.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Flat feet are also referred to as “fallen arches.” As the name suggests, this condition results from collapsed arches or when the feet lay flat against the floor while walking. Babies and toddlers do not have arches at first, but they develop them as they grow. Flat feet can develop if arches do not mature normally. This may happen because of shoes that do not provide adequate arch support, wearing high heels, or overpronation (rolling inward) of the feet. While flat feet should not interfere with the usability of a person’s feet, the pain might be felt in the feet or calves since the feet must work harder to compensate for the lack of arches. If you suspect you have flat feet it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for proper evaluation, customized creation of arch supports, and any other treatment that may be required.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact our podiatrists from CNY Foot Surgery & Podiatry Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

A bunion is defined as a bony lump on the side of the big toe. It can come from genetic factors, wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, or possibly from enduring a toe injury. As the bunion grows, it can push the big toe closer to the second toe, and larger footwear often needs to be worn. Some patients experience pain and discomfort, and the bunion and surrounding areas can become tender, red, and inflamed. It can be difficult to complete daily activities, and it may impact the ability to exercise. It can help to maintain the correct weight to keep unnecessary pressure off of the foot. If the bunion is severe, surgery may be necessary for permanent removal, and this is referred to as a bunionectomy. If you think you may have a bunion, it is strongly suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can help you to find relief.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact our podiatrists of CNY Foot Surgery & Podiatry Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery
